A fertilizer storage building in Edwardsburg is a total loss after a fire broke out there early Wednesday morning.
Edwardsburg Fire Chief Bruce Stack said police fire marshals are trying to determine the cause of the fire, which began around 2 a.m. at 27138 Max St.
Damage to the mostly wood pole barn and its contents are estimated at $750,000. The building is part of the company IF-CO Inc., which is owned by a local farmer.
Stack said 50 percent of the roof was gone by the time Edwardsburg firefighters arrived first on the scene. The fire was under control in about an hour and crews remained on site for more than three hours. No one was injured.
Stack called it one of the biggest fires he’s dealt with in a long time. About 35 firefighters from Clay Township, Cleveland Township and Cassopolis assisted.
