Bangor rally eliminates BobcatsPublished 10:27pm Wednesday, February 15, 2012
DECATUR — A 28-point lead with five bouts remaining wasn’t big enough for Brandywine to hold on to Wednesday night at the Division 4 Regional Tournament at Decatur High School.
The Bobcats gave up four pins and a technical fall in the last five bouts to fall to Bangor 37-36.
In the other semifinal, Decatur defeated Watervliet 42-20.
Brandywine (24-7) built up a 36-8 advantage on the Vikings using five pins and a decision.
In a match that started at 215-pounds, the Bobcats picked up three consecutive wins to take an early 15-0 lead.
Charlie Rodriguez decisioned Kenny Aemiseger 6-5, Cory Katterheinrich pinned David Garcia in 2:15 and Aeslan Rehman pinned Ishmael Hodge in 1:22.
Bangor rallied to cut the lead to 15-8 with back-to-back major decisions.
Three consecutive pins by Brandywine — Brandon Earles at 125, Nick Wright at 130 and Chanc Ravish at 135 — gave the Bobcats 33-8 advantage.
When Kenny Laurita defeated Corless Parker at 140, Brandywine had a 28-point lead.
David McNealy started the Vikings’ comeback with a technical fall at 145 before four consecutive pins, including three in the third period, spelled doom for the Bobcats.
When Adam Borah picked up the final pin with 30 seconds remaining in the final bout of the night, the comeback was complete and Bangor was headed to the finals to take on No. 5-ranked Decatur.
“It’s been our story this year,” Brandywine coach Rex Pomranka said. “We either pin or get pinned. We were coming along. We had a big match at 40. But Bangor wanted it more than us and I was afraid of that.
“Heckuva dual meet, we just came up a little short.”
