Man from Niles killed by police

The home invasion suspect fatally shot by a Berrien County police officer during a struggle Monday afternoon was from Niles.

An autopsy found that William Barker, 37, died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.

Berrien County police confronted the suspect near a home on Wedgewood Drive in South Bend when the suspect cut Berrien County officer Trent Babcock with a knife. An officer then shot Barker.

Police were responding to a tip that a person wanted on a felony warrant out of Michigan was at a hotel on State Road 933. The suspect was expected to be armed.

Police spotted the Barker’s vehicle and the suspect at the hotel at around 3:30 p.m. Monday. Police followed the suspect into the parking lot of the Pay N Pakit near State Line Road in South Bend. The suspect exited the vehicle, headed east on Wedgewood Drive and attempted to enter a home.

At that point Berrien County police confronted the suspect.
