PAW PAW — The domination of the Allegan wrestling team in the Wolverine Conference continued Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers won their 20th league championship and their 13th in the past 14 years.

Allegan, ranked No. 4 in Division 2, won six individual championships and had 10 wrestlers in the finals as it amassed 236 points to easily outdistance runner-up Otsego, which had four individual champions and 207.5 points. The Bulldogs are rated No. 7 in Division 3.

Three Rivers was third with 116 points, Comstock fourth with 94 and Vicksburg fifth with 85.

Dowagiac placed ninth with 24.5 points. The Chieftains took just four wrestlers to the tournament.

Junior Matt Lyle finished second at 130-pounds. Lyle lost by technical fall (20-5) to Otsego’s Alberto Lopez. Lopez is the No. 1-ranked wrestler in Division 2 according to Michigan Grappler.

“Matt is steady Eddie on the mat,” Dowagiac coach Matt Alward said. “He was seeded second and drew Alberto Lopez in the finals. Matt went out and battled. Alberto was mad that he wasn’t able to pin him. What he doesn’t realize is Matt is almost impossible to pin because he’s so flexible.

“We didn’t wrestle our best as a group. The last several tournaments we have taken four or five kids and done pretty well. Today wasn’t our day.”

Dowagiac also took Daniel Crandall, who lost a pair of close matches; Carl Grant, who sustained an injury; and Tristan Howard, who won a match and the lost his next two.

At the JV wrestling tournament Friday night, Dowagiac placed four wrestlers.

Anthony Daisey and Caleb Sands both finished second, while Tom Smith and Aubrey Huston were both third.

“The whole team has shown improvement throughout the season,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said.

Dowagiac will now travel to Berrien Springs Thursday to compete in the Division 3 team tournament.

The Chieftains will wrestle Berrien Springs at 6 p.m.
