Niles senior Brittiany Greene is hoping to see something she created out in the real world.

Greene, who is in her fourth year of graphic arts at Niles High School, is planning on pursuing a career in Web design. For her upper-level graphic design class, Greene and a partner are creating an advertisement for Niles Community Schools that could appear in Leader Publications’ upcoming Horizons section.

The only catch is that Greene and her partner are competing with the dozens of other students in her class. The best advertisement wins and will appear in Horizons.

“I do want to win because it would be a great piece to put in my portfolio,” Greene said. “It is cool to because I get to create something from scratch using all the skills I’ve learned over four years here.”

Niles students in teacher Alyse Hoyt’s digital imaging class will be using the rest of this week to create their advertisement.

Hoyt said the goal of the advertisement is to promote Niles Community Schools as a great place to learn. The project comes in the middle of the course’s advertising unit, in which students are analyzing advertisements to see what makes them effective. Students are also learning how to interview clients and find out what they are looking for in an advertisement.

“This is a project where they will hopefully apply what they’ve learned during the advertising unit so they can draw a connection,” Hoyt said. “This also gives them some real-world experience. I’d say about half are looking to use graphic arts in their career.”

In this project, Niles Community Schools is the client. Hoyt said herself, the class and administrative assistant Michelle Dreitzler would collaborate to choose a winner.

“It is exciting that I actually get to do something for the school, an advertisement, and it might actually be out there for people to see,” said senior Kenny Bucholz.

The deadline for the project is Jan. 31. The winning advertisement is expected to appear in Horizons, which is published Feb. 23.
