Second-grader Ruby Maggert, Sarah Maggert and kindergartener Mason Maggert attend Family Night at Justus Gage Elementary.

The staff at Justus Gage Elementary hosted Math Night Jan. 19. About 50 students and parents ventured out into the cold, snowy night for an evening full of nontraditional math activities.
“Math is all around us and can even be fun. It doesn’t always have to be taught with a textbook, pencil and paper,” said Cari Soderbloom, Justus Gage Title I teacher.
Families that attended formed their favorite animals using Tangrams. They also charted the number of each color of M&Ms in a pack. At the end, families enjoyed a tasty treat by using their M&Ms to decorate cookies. Teachers shared several games using a deck of cards that families also can play at home to use everyday math skills and practice basic math facts. Families used their estimation skills to figure the numbers of pencils, marshmallows, candies and other snacks to win those door prizes.
