The Lakeland Comprehensive Weight Loss Center is offering a free seminar, “Lose Weight…Gain Health.”

The seminar will be presented at 6:30 p.m. on the following dates:

• Feb. 1: Lakeland Regional Medical Center,  Frederick S. Upton Education Center, 1234 Napier Ave., St. Joseph

• Feb. 15: Lakeland Comprehensive Weight Loss Center,
6 Longmeadow Village Drive, Suite 2, Niles

Dr. Michael Schuhknecht, one of Michigan’s most experienced bariatric surgeons, and staff members of the Lakeland Comprehensive Weight Loss Center will discuss programs available for losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight for years to come.

The Lakeland Comprehensive Weight Loss Center specializes in working with each person to create a customized lifestyle plan, including medical weight loss management through diet or bariatric surgery, nutrition counseling, individualized exercise programs and monthly support groups.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, about 190 million adults in the United States are overweight and obese. Individuals more than 40 percent overweight are twice as likely to die prematurely as someone of average weight.

However, the good news is that losing as little as 5 to 15 percent of your initial body weight can reduce the risk of diabetes and other illnesses and can even eliminate your need for some medications.

For more information or to register for either the St. Joseph or Niles seminar, call (269) 687-4673 or (877) 467-3858, or visit www.lakelandhealth.org/weightloss.

Walk-in screenings

To help residents learn about their possible risk factors, Lakeland HealthCare is offering walk-in wellness screenings at Lakeland Rehabilitation Services at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA, 905 North Front St., Niles.

The screenings are offered from 7 to 10 a.m. Feb. 3 and include:

• Cholesterol Lipid Panel (12-hour fasting cholesterol). This screening helps determine the risk of heart disease. Cost is $39.

• Osteoporosis Health Screen (bone density screen). The Achilles Express uses ultrasound to evaluate bone status in the heel, providing a T-score for determining bone density. Cost is $29.

• Body Composition Analysis (body fat percentage). Determines accurate body composition in less than 10 seconds, and an analysis calculates the amount of fat mass to be lost in order to achieve a healthy body fat percentage. Cost is $29.

Participants receive a free blood pressure screening with any paid service. The same screenings are offered each Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Margaret Beckley Upton Center for Health Enhancement at the Lakeland Center for Outpatient Services, 3900 Hollywood Rd., St. Joseph. The screenings are sponsored by the Margaret Beckley Upton Center for Health Enhancement at Lakeland.
