The biggest game of the Lakeland Conference girls basketball season will be in Edwardsburg Tuesday night when two-time defending champion Brandywine takes on the host Eddies.

The Bobcats (9-0 overall, 4-0 Lakeland) and Edwardsburg (6-4, 4-0 Lakeland) are the only two unbeaten in league play through the first four games.

Brandywine will put its 33-game Lakeland Conference winning streak on the line tonight against the Eddies.

The Bobcats are led by the area’s top scorer Carlie Newman, who set a new school record Friday night with 33 points against Buchanan. Newman is currently averaging 22 points per game.

“We need to limit Newman’s opportunities and pass well through their defensive pressure,” Edwardsburg coach Nicole Cartwright said. “Bottom line is the team who makes the least mistakes will win.”

Brandywine is more than just the Newman show. The Bobcats are quarterbacked by point guard Mackenzie Shelton and has two more outside threats in Rachael Ort and freshman Brooke Smith.

Madison Pellow is counted on to provide the points in the paint and to pound the boards.

Edwardsburg will use a three-guard attack to try and snap the Bobcats’ winning streak.

Sarah D’Amico, Ashley Streb and Mariah Murphy are all capable of putting up big numbers and Brandywine coach Josh Hood is well aware of it.

“Edwardsburg has three third-year starters,” he said. “So they’re going to be able to handle pressure. That means we’re going to have to do a great job in our half-court defense to be able to stop penetration.”

Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

Wolverine Conference

It is a pivotal week for the Dowagiac boys basketball team as it takes on the top two teams in the Wolverine Conference.

The Chieftains will play host to both Otsego (4-0) and Vicksburg (3-0) this week beginning tonight with the undefeated Bulldogs.

Dowagiac (3-0) will take on an Otsego team that has outscored its league opponents 246-188 so far this season and is averaging 61.5 points per contest in winning its first five games of the 2011-12 season.

Otsego is led by Western Michigan-bound Jared Kline, who is averaging 23.4 points per game. Kline has a season-high of 29 points and scored 25 points Friday night in the Bulldogs’ 61-43 victory over Allegan.

Otsego is holding its opponents to 47 points per game.

Dowagiac despite playing one less league game so far is averaging 76.6 points per game in conference action. The Chieftains’ opponents are scoring 59 points a contest.

Dowagiac is led by junior point guard Dontel Highsmith, who despite having a season-low 18 points Friday night against Three Rivers, is still leading the area in scoring with an average of 32 points per game.

Highsmith is averaging 39 points a game against Wolverine Conference opponents.

Ironically, it was Three Rivers that held Klein to his season low output of nine points in a loss to the Bulldogs.

Dowagiac and Otsego have two common opponents this season.

The Chieftains defeated Allegan 72-60 and Three Rivers 62-54. The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 61-43 and the Wildcats 51-45.

The game is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.
