Chieftains back in action

The holiday break is over and the Dowagiac girls and boys basketball teams are heading back to the hardwood Friday night.

The Chieftains will play host to Three Rivers in a girl-boy Wolverine Conference doubleheader in the Union High gym.

The Dowagiac girls basketball team is still in search of its first victory of the season tonight as they play host to the Wildcats, who were in the state finals last year.

Tip-off is set for 5:45 p.m.

The Chieftains are 0-5 so far this season and 0-3 in conference play.

Dowagiac is led by point guard Correshia Rodgers, who is among the area’s top scorers, averaging 13.6 points per game.

Three Rivers comes into tonight’s action with a 6-1 record and a 3-0 mark in league contests.

The Wildcats are led by Teagan Reeves and Linsey Masnari.

The Dowagiac boys basketball team will try to remain undefeated in the Wolverine Conference tonight when it hosts a struggling Three Rivers squad.

The Chieftains are coming off their first loss of the season, a 64-41 setback at the hands of Benton Harbor in the championship game of the Earl McKee Holiday Classic last week.

Dowagiac enters tonight’s game with a 4-1 mark overall and a 2-0 record in league play. Otsego and Vicksburg are both tied at 3-0 atop the conference standings.

The Chieftains will be led by the area’s top scorer, junior point guard Dontel Highsmith. Highsmith is averaging 35 points per game.

Three Rivers is 1-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

The Wildcats are led by Brady Reeves.

The tip is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

Dowagiac wrestling

The Dowagiac wrestling team will travel to Parma Western to compete in a tournament this weekend.

Last week, the Chieftains finished ninth at the Horseshoe Invitational at Comstock High School Dec. 29.

Due to technical issues, complete results were unavailable until recently.

Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central was the team champion with 170 points. Wayland Union was second with 138 and Cedar Springs third with 133.5.

Buchanan was the top area finisher with a fifth place effort and 117.5 points. Dowagiac finished with 75 points as it had five wrestlers place.

Matt Lyle grabbed the top finish as he reached the championship match before falling to Buchanan’s Jeff Mucha via a pin. Lyle went 3-1 on the day.

Carl Grant was third at 215-pounds as he defeated Mario Aburto of Covert in the consolation finals. Grant was 3-1 in his four matches.

Jacob Worthington (125), Daniel Crandall (160) and Tristan Howard (285) all finished sixth in their respective weight classes. All three wrestlers completed the day at 3-2.
