Off shooting night for ChiefsPublished 11:38pm Wednesday, December 28, 2011
BENTON HARBOR — Too many offensive possessions by host Benton Harbor led to the first loss of the season for the Dowagiac boys basketball team Wednesday night.
The host Tigers defeated the Chieftains 64-41 in the championship game of the Earl McKee Holiday Classic.
Despite a game-high 26 point output by Dowagiac’s Dontel Highsmith, the Chieftains were unable to produce much offense against Benton Harbor and finished the night shooting 9-of-35 from the field (26 percent).
“We beat ourselves tonight,” Dowagiac coach Danum Hunt said. “There is nothing that they did that we didn’t prepare for or didn’t expect. The ball just didn’t go down for us tonight. It reminded me of East Lansing (state semifinals) all over again.
Benton Harbor took an early 18-5 lead on the Chieftains and led by 24 points, 40-16, at halftime.
Dowagiac was able to limit Benton Harbor to just seven points in the third quarter, but was unable to take advantage of it.
“Defensively we were able to stifle them in the third quarter, but our inability to score didn’t allow us to get back in the game,” Hunt said.
The Chieftains trailed 47-25 heading into the final quarter.
Besides Highsmith’s output, Dowagiac also got 10 points from Brendon Murray. In all, only four Chieftains reached the scoring column.
Roy Napier led the Tigers with 16 points. Deontae Whitfield, Raheem Franklin and Andrew Ellis each scored 13 points for Benton Harbor.
The Dowagiac JV boys basketball team advanced to the finals of the Earl McKee Holiday Classic with a 47-42 win over host Benton Harbor Tuesday afternoon.
Dontae Murphy and Bobby Smith each had 10 points for the Chieftains, who also got seven points from Zack Williams.
Dowagiac plays either Bridgman or Benton Harbor’s “B” team today at 4 p.m.
