Happened to see Ron Reeves Dec. 14 at C. Wimberley while covering Ford’s $5,700 conclusion to the $17,000 fundraising effort by Celebration Graduation 2012.
I don’t know if he even realizes it, but he introduced me to my wife.
In a gas station. She wanted directions to interview for my job.
This was 30 years ago, in 1981, when Sue came to the Daily News to interview for the reporting job I left to join the Herald-Palladium state desk.
She got lost and pulled in to the old Clark station between Zarry’s Alley (named for a newsman!) and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Ron was the attendant. I saw him out of the corner of my eye sort of jerk his thumb my direction, as if to say, “Ask him, he works there.”
Our first date was on Nov. 19, which happens to be our first-born’s birthday in 1988,  which happened to be her Grandma Jordan’s birthday, so guess what we named him?
When Judy Bock left, I returned that December and we became co-editors until Sue left to have Jordan and Vickie Phillipson joined the newsroom.
Sue covered the city and did most of the layouts.
My beats included county stuff like the Board of Commissioners and school board.
Once, Elizabeth Dole, as in Bob’s wife, asked me how we could work together as spouses. There were some monumental clashes, more Mick and Keith or Ray and Dave Davies or Noel and Liam Gallagher than John and Paul, but we married on Oct.12 (I discovered a new world on Columbus Day, I could remember that!) in 1985 and now have three children and a grandson.
Sue, ever the Hoosier, subscribes to Bobby Knight journalism theory — learn to write in grade school, then move on to something else.
She became a graphic designer and teaches computers at the college while I stayed a “Seinfeld” episode — no growth, no hugging.
I can’t dance, so a Fred Astaire analogy isn’t very apropos, but her Ginger Rogers could fix my computer backward and in high heels.
Fortunately for me, her navigational skills are less stellar than her mechanical capabilities.
