BUCHANAN — A pair of Buchanan police officers were honored Monday for their life-saving efforts last month.

John Leonard and Eric Lotsbaich rescued a man whose boat capsized on Dayton Lake in Bertrand Township Nov. 5.

The man was unable to escape because fish hooks got caught in his calf and shirt sleeve and the line was stuck on the boat, according to City PoliceChief Bill Marx. Leonard and Lotsbaich found a canoe and paddled out to save the man, who said he couldn’t swim.

Mayor Carla Cole called the rescue an “extraordinary act of bravery” and presented the officers with Lifesaver Awards during the Buchanan City Commission meeting this week.

“I commend the officers for being creative and going above and beyond the call,” Commissioner Pat Moore said. “It could have been a totally different outcome.”
