Penn captures Chieftain Invitational

DOWAGIAC — Penn placed nine wrestlers in the championship finals Saturday afternoon at the Chieftain Invitational Wrestling Tournament.

The Kingsmen grabbed the championship as five of those wrestlers earned individual championships.

Penn easily defeated runner-up Fairfield (Ind.) 272.5-194.5. Lakeshore was third with 113, Hopkins fourth with 110, Berrien Springs fifth with 104, Dowagiac sixth with 89 and Niles seventh with 71.5.

Penn, Lakeshore and Niles were wrestling a “B” team at the tournament, while Dowagiac had just eight wrestlers compete.

The Chieftains did have two wrestlers advance to the finals, with Jacob Worthington earning the 119-pound crown with a pin of Berrien Springs’ Cameron McCary in 1:10.

Carl Grant finished second at 215 pounds as he was edged by Hopkins’ Kyle Cooper 12-10 in overtime.

The Vikings had one wrestler advance to the finals. Josh Dayhuff was defeated by Hopkins’ Nick Miller 8-6 at 125 pounds.

Dowagiac’s Matt Lyle was third at 135 pounds, while Niles’ Sean Craig was third at 145 pounds. The Chieftains’ Dan Crandall was fourth at 160 pounds. The Vikings’ Steven Rickords was fourth at 171 pounds and Travis Edwards fourth at 215 pounds.

Dowagiac’s Tristan Howard was fourth at 275 pounds.
