Southwestern Michigan College Brass Band will be at Federated Covenant Church, 202 Center St. in Dowagiac, for a holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Admission is free and open to the public.
The band will be performing a selection of seasonal sacred music.
“Federated Covenant Church is excited to host the brass band for this special holiday concert,” said the Rev. Jen Lowe, co-pastor at FCC.
“Music has always been important to this church, and in the past it has put on a large Christmas Eve program. We are a small church now, but we wanted to do something to bless our community for this Advent and Christmas season, so we contacted SMC, and Jon Korzun responded quickly. We know the drop in the economy has hit Dowagiac hard, and many can’t afford to pay for an event like this, so we hope this free Christmas concert will provide some joy for people in our city.”
Federated Covenant Church is located at 202 Center St. in Dowagiac.

The Southwestern Michigan College Brass Band was founded in January of 1992 by its current director, Dr. Jonathan Korzun, Director of Bands at SMC. It is composed of area band directors, community members and SMC students. It is a British-style ensemble modeled after the brass bands so popular throughout Europe. The Brass Band is one of three bands at SMC. The Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble are student groups that meet each fall and winter semester.
The SMC Brass Band rehearses Wednesday nights on the Dowagiac campus and its season runs from September through June.
SMC is the school of choice for the music major, as well as the student wishing to include music as a part of their college experience.
SMC offers collegiate level musical training and performance opportunities through a wide variety of choral and instrumental ensembles accompanied by a complete music curriculum. Students may pursue an Associate in Arts transfer degree in music, with course offerings that parallel curricula of colleges and universities nationwide. SMC music majors have proven success at four-year institutions throughout the Midwest, finding themselves well-prepared to complete their bachelor’s degree.
