To say the Niles-Buchanan YMCA building, which opened in 2006, has been a success is an understatement, according to Greg Schuman.

Schuman, the membership and marketing director for the YMCA, said membership has more than tripled since moving into the 56,000-square-foot facility on Front Street five years ago.

“It was such an upgrade from the old facility (315 W. Main St.),” Schuman said. “The community really responded. Even with the down economy, we haven’t seen a decline (in membership).”

In celebration of the fifth anniversary of the building, the YMCA is holding a community open house during normal business hours Monday.

Schuman said there will be free food, and tours will be provided to non-members. The YMCA will also be waiving its joiner fee for those that join that day. The event is a “thank you” to the community, Schuman said.

The Niles-Buchanan YMCA originated in 1941 and had been in the old West Main Street building since 1961. The YMCA currently has about 10,000 members.
