A small group of Niles New Tech Entrepreneurial Academy students are getting a jump on learning how to create social change by launching an effort to make Niles’ schools a little cooler next summer.
Six New Tech students are organizing a collection drive for fans, which would be used inside classrooms next year. They are accepting donations of new and slightly used fans Thursday, Sept. 1 at two locations. One group will be collecting fans at the Niles Bensidoun French Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. while a second group will be collecting fans at Niles High School from noon to 8 p.m.
Last week, the small group of students organizing the event met at Westside Administration
Building to formulate their plan and present it to New Tech’s dean, Patrick Malley.
“It was the students’ idea from the start,” Malley said. “They asked me if I minded them organizing a fan drive. Why would I? It’s a great idea and it’s just the type of initiative we want to support at New Tech this year.”
The students’ goal is to cool as many classrooms as possible throughout the district. If they collect more fans than they know what to do with, they plan to make a fan donation themselves to a local charity.
In addition to accepting fan donations, students will also be collecting contact information from anyone wishing to join the Niles New Tech Fan Club. The group’s plan is to keep this club informed of upcoming New Tech events and news throughout the year. Fan club members will even get a fan club card.
