LMC to offer robotics, Fab Lab classes

Lake Michigan College’s Bertrand Crossing Campus is offering several classes this fall for students 15 and younger in robotics and the Fab Lab. The following is a sampling of classes offered. The full schedule of classes at all LMC campuses is available at www.lakemichigancollege.edu/ce.
• Fab Lab for Elementary and Middle School Students — Tuesdays, Sept. 6 through Dec. 13, 3 to 5 p.m., Room 108, $300 for elementary students; Tuesdays, Sept. 6 through Dec. 13, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., room 108, $300.  Students learn how to make just about anything by working on several projects to learn the rudiments of product design, problem solving, prototyping, and using the simple Fab Lab machinery. Be a part of the global Fab Lab network and exchange ideas with students and fabbers from around the globe.  Emphasis on safety and standard operation of Fab Lab tools. Includes Open Lab on Wednesdays from 5 to 9 p.m.; for elementary students under age 10.
• Elementary Robotics I — Mondays, Sept. 12 through Dec. 12, 10 to 11 am., Room 104, $250. Use Lego’s simple machines kit to learn about levers, friction and more as part of fun projects that build on each other each week. Ages 6-9.
• Elementary Robotics II — Mondays, Sept. 12 through Dec. 12, 1 to 2 p.m., Room 104, $250. Students will use the new WeDo kits from Lego, learn to build from blueprints and learn some programming skills. Ages 6-9.
• Robotics I — Wednesdays, Sept. 7 through Dec. 14, 4 to 7 p.m., Room 104, $350. Students will work in pairs to solve challenges by building and programming robots using the Lego (NXT) Robotics Invention System. Students will build robots and attachments from blueprints, learn to use sensors and levers and learn how to do beginning programming. Ages 9-15.
