Editorial: Public forum a step in the right direction

Two heads are often better than one when addressing an issue, and a room full of minds is even better.
Two Niles City Council members are doing just that by organizing a community forum Thursday, Aug. 11 called “Saving Our Future.” The forum will be held at 6 p.m. in the Niles City Council Chambers. Local school district representatives and police officers will be on hand to address the direction this area’s youth are heading in.
First Ward council members Georgia Boggs and Pat Gallagher said they are concerned about recent news reports regarding youth charged with crimes for allegedly recording and sending sex videos. They hope to get the discussion rolling with youth, adults, teachers, ministers, judges and other citizens by organizing the forum. Police officers will even give a presentation on sexting.
No matter what kind of turnout this forum has, it is important to keep this discussion out in the public. Although a few individuals may not be representative of the entire youth population, recent court news does raise questions about what kids are doing in our homes, schools and communities. What do they know? What have they done? What have they seen? Let’s let them tell their side.
Talking about these issues may prevent our youth from making bad decisions that could hurt their futures.
