Kessick wins third title

The Niles City Golf Tournament took place at Plym Park Golf Course over the weekend and the last two champions, John Kessick and Paul Krause were tied after 36 holes forcing a playoff for the 2011 championship.

Kessick, the 2009 city champion won the title with a birdie on the first playoff hole knocking down an eight-foot putt.

“It was exciting,” joked Kessick after winning his third city championship.

Krause had a one stroke lead over Kessick at the beginning of the day having shot 79 on Saturday, but Kessick’s 76 on Sunday bettered Krause’s 77 leaving both golfers tied at 156 through the two-day tournament.

In the “A” Flight it was Jason Ensign taking home the title with a 160 total through both days. Ensign shot 82 on Saturday and an impressive 78 on Sunday, while Josh Townsley and Terry Churchill each tied for second with a 164 total.

Aaron Kelley (164) took the “B” Flight title by three strokes over Matt Brawley (167). Kelley shot 82-82 including four consecutive 41 scores.

Tim Mervine (217) edged out Jacob Carter (223) for the “C” Flight title.

In the Senior Championship Flight, Bob Freshley erased a two-stroke deficit with a four-under par 68 to win the city title with a score of 142. Freshley shot 36-32 on the final day scoring low round of the tournament. Fred Knutel was second with a 148.

In the Senior “A” Flight Bob Blue (176) edged Jim Crouch and Ed Ralston by one stroke. Crouch and Ralston tied for second with a 177 total.

Rounding out the 2011 titles was Bob Lloyd with a four-stroke win over second place finisher Ron Peters in the Senior “B”Flight. Lloyd shot 187 while Peters finished with a 191.
