CASSOPOLIS — Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz says drug activity and robbery go hand in hand.

That certainly was on display Friday at Cass County Circuit Court when two local men were sentenced to jail for thefts that supported heroin addictions.

Dustin Gordon, 20, of Edwardsburg, was sentenced to 210 days in jail and two years of probation. He will receive credit for 64 days already served.

Also Friday, Kevin Kujawa, a Niles resident, was sentenced to 90 days in jail with two years of probation. Kujawa, 25, will receive credit for 57 days already served.

Gordon’s offense occurred in May when he stole a check from his mother and cashed it for $100 to support his heroin habit.

“The fact you were willing to steal from your own mother is an indication of just how low your heroin addiction has taken you,” said Judge Michael Dodge.

He then told Gordon the last person he saw with a heroin addiction is now dead after an overdose.

Fitz said Gordon already has four previous criminal convictions at age 20, including an offense of stealing his grandmother’s computer to support his drug addiction.

“This is something a third- or fourth-grader would do but certainly not a grown man,” Fitz said. “But he’s still young enough to make his mother proud.”

For his part, Gordon was remorseful.

“I apologize to my mother. I love her,” he said. “I look forward to putting this in the past and moving forward.”

For Kujawa, his heroine addiction led to him stealing two rings from his girlfriend’s mother in January when he was staying at her Niles home.

The rings were valued at more than $5,000 and he pawned them for $75.

“He bit the hand of someone sheltering him,” Fitz said.

Kujawa’s attorney Lawrence Quigley said his client has the motivation to stay clean for his son.

For his part, Kujawa said he has completed a rehabilitation program and turned himself in for the offense when he found out there was a warrant for his arrest.
