On Oct. 3, the 24th annual Cass County CROP Hunger Walk will again take place to help fight hunger around the world, including Cass County.

CROP is an acronym for Christian Rural Overseas Program.

According to the World Health Organization, hunger is the world’s major health risk.
Twenty-five percent of the funds collected remains in Cass County, going to such originations as Helping Hands of Cassopolis, Feed My Sheep in Dowagiac, Salvation Army CURE in Dowagiac and The South County Food Pantry at Our Lady of the Lake in Edwardsburg.

In 2010, 140 walkers participated.

The goal this year is for each participating church to add a walker.
Rev. James Richie of Cassopolis UMC and Rev. Steve Kaszar of Cassopolis Presbyterian Church are co-chairs.

The CROP walk has two awards presented each year.

The traveling high top shoe trophy  is passed around yearly to the church collecting the most funds and the other award is presented to the individual raising the most funds.

The CROP recruiter meeting is scheduled for Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Cassopolis UMC at 209 S. Rowland St. Join them to see how you can be a partner in combating hunger here and abroad.
