No children were injured when a Niles Community Schools bus collided with two vehicles at Third and Sycamore streets in Niles at approximately 3:30 p.m. today.

According to Niles Fire Chief Larry Lamb, the bus was heading westbound on Sycamore Street when two vehicles — a small four-door car and a GMC Envoy — hit the front of the bus. At least one of the vehicles was attempting to make a right-hand turn from Third Street onto Sycamore, but the circumstances that led to the accident are unclear, Lamb said.

Five 4- and 5-year-old children from Niles Community Schools were being bused home when the accident occurred. A Dial-A-Ride bus was called to the scene so the children could sit in an air-conditioned vehicle.

None of the students could leave until a parent picked them up; contact information for four of five of them was incorrect.

An occupant of one of the smaller vehicles was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The two smaller vehicles sustained minor damage; the bus was not damaged.

Lamb explained that buses are purposely designed to ride higher “so the force goes under” the bus during an accident.

All children on the bus were in car seats and were wearing seat belts.

The Niles Police Department and Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.
