Just months after being featured on a Food Network program called “Ice Brigade,” downtown Niles will be featured on cable television again.

Niles DDA Main Street Director Lisa Croteau said downtown Niles was named the “Best Main Street in Michigan” by the travel website officialbestof.com.

A film crew from the website will be in Niles Saturday to shoot footage for an upcoming 30-minute program, featuring some of the top destinations in the Michigan, to be aired on the Discovery Channel and WWJ in Detroit. Niles will be featured in a two-minute segment of the program.

Croteau said the DDA Main Street didn’t apply for the honor, and she was surprised to find out it had won.

“It’s pretty freaking exciting,” she said. “We’re looking for a multitude of ways to tell our story and have people learn about and visit Niles, and this is a great way.”

Croteau said based on conversations with officials from other communities featured in the program, the results are “phenomenal.”

“I’m hoping it will be the same for us and draw people here,” she said.

The filming will be done at a bustling time in Niles with the Bluegrass Festival and the French Market going on Saturday.

“The town definitely looks good this time of year,” Croteau said.

Main Street officials are looking for volunteers to help clean up the downtown area by pulling and removing trash on Thursday at 5 p.m. The film crew will be downtown 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
