Public Safety Director Tom Atkinson reports that his officers arrested a juvenile subject for breaking into a local business in Dowagiac.

Early Saturday morning, May 28, at approximately 12:40, officers of the Dowagiac Police Department were dispatched to Encore School of the Arts, formerly Lincoln School, at 405 E. Division St. in reference to an alarm sounding.

Upon arriving, officers began checking the perimeter and located a male subject hiding in some bushes next to the building.

Officers confronted the subject and attempted to take him into custody.

The subject resisted and was able to flee officers for a short time, but officers located the subject in an adjacent yard in the area.

He was taken into custody without any further incident.

Officers recovered property stolen from the Dowagiac Boxing Club located in the Encore building.

Investigation revealed that the suspect entered the building and stole property from the Dowagiac Boxing Club.

City police transported the 16-year-old suspect from Dowagiac to the police department.

After conferring with Cass County Probate Court, the subject was turned over to a parent and will be petitioned into Cass County Probate Court, according to Deputy Chief Steven L. Grinnewald.
