Fernwood welcomes garden designer Piet Oudolf

Upcoming Fernwood events, features, classes and programs include:

• Yoga returns Saturday, May 21
Thursdays and Saturdays beginning on May 21, 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.
Yoga classes return Saturday, May 21, and continue through the fall on Thursdays and Saturdays, 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Deirdre Guthrie of Yoga Glow in Three Oaks returns as instructor. Classes are held outside, weather permitting. Guthrie has taught yoga since 1998 and has facilitated yoga workshops and retreats all over the world. The cost is $10 or $8 for members.

• Warblers at Warren Dunes
Saturday, May 21, 8 to 11:30 a.m
Catch the wave of spring migration as it arrives in Michiana. Naturalist Wendy Jones helps participants identify colorful warblers, rose-breasted grosbeaks, indigo buntings, orioles and hummingbirds. Dress for walking the trails. Meet at Warren Dunes State Park north entrance, directions available. The fee is $15 or $12 for members. Registration required by May 20.

• Vineyard/Winery Tour and wine
pairings
Saturday, May 21, 5 to 9 p.m.
Travel to the beautiful springtime Avonlea Vineyard in Buchanan, where owner Jim Lester explains viniculture, the growing of wine grapes, in Michigan’s microclimate. Next stop is Lester’s winery, Wyncroft, www.wyncroftwine.com, Michigan’s first boutique winery, to learn about the wine-making process.
This small artisan winery creates estate-grown and bottled wines that are served in some of the finest restaurants in Chicago and Detroit. End the night at Fernwood by enjoying four Wyncroft wines with plated pairings prepared by Chef Tim Carrigan. The fee is $110 or $95 for members. Reservations required by May 19.

• Member Mornings have begun
Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Mornings at 7:30 a.m.
Member Mornings are held on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings at 7:30 a.m. through fall. On these mornings, members are invited to come out to enjoy walking, photography and birding in the early morning before Fernwood opens to the public. Gates open at 7:30 a.m. and participants are asked to check in at the visitor center.  Member mornings are just one of the benefits of being a Fernwood member.

• Look for Fernwood at the Buchanan
Farmers’ Market
Saturdays through October 22, 8 a.m.
to 1 p.m.
Fernwood is participating in the Buchanan Farmers’ Market once again this year. The market is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., through October 22. Stop by to pick up a plant or special treat from the Fernwood Cafe.

• Don’t miss Piet Oudolf
It’s nearly time for Piet Oudolf’s rare visit to the U.S. and his lecture at Fernwood on Friday, June 3, at 6:30 p.m. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to see Oudolf, designer of many public and private gardens, including Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park and the High Line in New York City.
Register today to meet Oudolf at this wine and cheese event, which includes a lecture on garden design inspired by nature and the signing of his newest book,  Landscapes in Landscapes: Between Landscapes and Gardens. Fulfills one hour of Michigan Master Gardener continuing education credit. Fee is $50 or $40 for members.

• Visit Fernwood’s Railway Garden
Fernwood’s popular railway garden is now open for the season. The theme this year is  Roadside Attractions from across the country. There have been 14 whimsical buildings added, including the Coney Island Hot Dog Stand, a Rt. 66 Diner and the Brown Derby Restaurant, just to name a few. Continuing in our exhibit are the scale model replicas of the St. Joseph North Pier Lights, the St. Joseph Lighthouse, the Golden Dome of Notre Dame, Buchanan’s Pears Mill and the Niles Train Depot. And kids can test their skills on the railway garden scavenger hunt.

• Spring photography workshop
rescheduled
Saturday, May 21, at Fernwood and Sunday, May 22 in South Bend, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., both days
Join nationally known photographer, Danny Burk, to discover how to photograph flowers and enhance them on the computer in this class, rescheduled from last weekend.
On Saturday at Fernwood, learn how to choose good subjects, create attractive compositions, use a light meter properly and more.
On Sunday in Burk’s classroom, learn how to use Photoshop to optimize these images. Bring a tripod and digital camera with interchangeable lenses or close-up settings and user-adjustable settings. Instruction is tailored to individual level, beginner or advanced.

• Join Fernwood’s Window Box Challenge
Fernwood invites area youth, residents, and businesses to beautify their homes, businesses, and community by participating in our fourth annual Window Box Challenge. Registration is free.
Just call to be assigned an entry number and receive more information. Or sign up at Fernwood’s table at the Farmers’ Market. Register by Sunday, June 12. Voting will take place in late July. Prizes will be awarded and winners featured on Fernwood’s website and in the newsletter.
