The Michigan State Police is investigating a possible arson in Niles Township. The Niles Township and Niles City fire departments responded at 4:24 a.m. Monday to a fire to a home at 2419 Westfield Drive.

Niles Township Fire Chief Gary Brovold said the fire is believed to be an arson and encourages those with any information regarding the incident to call the Michigan State Police. A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for tips related to the fire.

Kathy Gilley, who lives in a house across the street, noticed the fire when she woke up for work around 4 a.m.

“I looked out my window and saw a huge glow in the backside of the house, and I thought it was just a light,” Gilley said.

She then noticed flames at the bottom of the garage and called the fire department.

Gilley said no one was living in the home, and it is owned by Randy Ritchey, who owns Randy’s Auto Service in Niles. Ritchey was trying to find renters for the building.
