NHS names Top Ten

Niles High School has announced its Top Ten students for 2010-11:

No. 1, Brett Phillips —  4.0682 GPA

Brett, a Niles resident,  is the son of Bob and Sue Phillips.

He has been a participant in the Berrien County Math and Science Center; co-captain of the varsity golf team; and editor of the Viking Journal, school newspaper. His honors include Outstanding Geometry Student, Outstanding Pre-Calculus Student, Outstanding Spanish III Student and the U.S. Air Force Award for his ISEF project.

Brett plans to attend the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan to study mechanical engineering, journalism and creative writing.

No. 2, Haley Davis — 4.0556 GPA

Haley, of Niles, is the daughter of Hal and Melanie Davis.

She was a class officer in 2009-11; vice president of the National Honors Society from 2009 to 2011; recording secretary of the student council from 2005 to 2011; in Key Club from 2007 to 2011; a cheerleader from 2005 to 2008; senior team captain and four-year varsity player on the varsity tennis team from 2007 to 2011; and on the equestrian team from 2005 to 2010. Haley has been involved in horse showing and still exhibits in 4-H from 2001 to 2010; a volunteer for the Niles Haunted House, The Salvation Army, Santa visits downtown and Michigan Blood drives; and a Niles tennis camp counselor. She earned several first places and grand champions in horseback riding from 2005 to 2008; won the Lanie Saurman Showmanship Award in 2008 and 2009; was in the Best of Show awards at the Cass County Fair from 2001 to 2010; won the George Eastman Young Leaders Scholarship in 2010; Excellence in Math from 2007 to 2011; Excellence in Spanish in 2007 and 2008; second place Box Factory award and Krasl scholarship for ceramics in 2010; Breakfast of Champions at Notre Dame from 2005 to 2011; the Scholar-Athlete Award from 2007 to 2011; and Academic All-State Tennis in 2010.

Haley plans to attend the University of Michigan to pursue a doctorate of pharmacy degree.

No. 3, Taylor Glick — 4.0547 GPA

Taylor, from Niles, is the daughter of Scott and Eileen Glick.

She has been historian of the SADD Club; and in National Honor Society, Spanish Club, varsity basketball, golf and tennis. She has been a volunteer at the Lakeland Hospital Emergency Room, Humane Society and Relay for Life. She has won the Society of Women Engineers Award; was a NCSSS MST Student Research Symposium participant; a participant in the Michigan High School Math and Science Symposium; Academic Achievement; and won the Scholar-Athlete Award.

Taylor plans to attend the University of Michigan to study biomedical engineering.

No. 4, Hope Johnson — 4.0125 GPA

Hope is a resident of Niles.

During her freshman year she participated in student counsel. She did not participate in sports or clubs due to a heavy academic schedule. She has been on the honor roll since seventh grade. She was invited to attend the Western Michigan University’s and Grand Valley State University’s scholarship competition and received an award from both schools. She was Rotary’s student of the month in January. She participates on a Relay for Life team and helps her family clean a road for the Adopt-a-Road program twice a year. She has worked at Samuel Mancino’s in Niles since March 2010. She enjoys reading fiction and spending time with her family.

Hope plans to earn a degree in medicine because she wants to become a physician. Her future plans are to become a general practitioner and later go back to school to earn a degree in obstetrics/gynecology. In the near future, she plans to attend Grand Valley State University to work on her pre-medicine degree and then hopefully attend Michigan State University’s medical school.

No. 5, Riley Robson — 3.9941 GPA

Riley, of Niles, is the son of Jess and Lynn Robson.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and student council and has played varsity football, basketball and baseball. He attended a mission trip to Jamaica in 2010. He achieved all A’s in grades 7-12; had perfect attendance junior year; Academic All-State Baseball 2010; SMAC West Conference champs in basketball 2010; and second team All-Conference tight end in 2010.

Riley plans to attend Michigan State University to study graphic arts and communications.

No. 6, Jessica Norris — 3.9939 GPA

Jessica, a Niles resident, is the daughter of Jeff and Renee Norris.

She has participated in varsity track and field as a sprinter for three years; has a part-time job at Taco Bell; and attends Berrien Center Bible Church.

Jessica plans to attend Grace College to attain a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and a master’s degree in business in four years. She hopes to work in promotional art in some form.

No. 7, Zachary Prenkert — 3.9880 GPA

Zachary, from Niles, is the son of Rebbeca Byers and William Prenkert.

He has been in varsity basketball and football; National Honor Society; Relay for Life; and has been a tutor. He was a Rennsalear medalist and Rotary Club student of the month in March.

Zachary plans to attend the University of Michigan and wants to become an orthopedic surgeon.

No. 8, Emily Rouse — 3.9876 GPA

According to NHS, Emily declined to participate.

No. 9, Jordan Potthoff — 3.9694 GPA

Jordan, of Niles, is the son of Shawn and Joe Potthoff.

He has been on the basketball, football and track teams; has participated in Habitat for Humanity; and refereed youth basketball. He made the honor roll four years; Academic All-State Football; and All-Conference football and track.

Jordan plans to attend the University of Michigan to study computer engineering.

No. 10, James Asmus — 3.9569 GPA

James, a Dowagiac resident, is the son of Garry and Sandra Asmus.

He has been in football four years and was captain his senior year; in wrestling three years and was captain his senior year; and in track four year. He coached elementary-age players at Niles High School Football Elementary Camp. He has been active at St. Ann’s Parish with set-up, planning, serving and clean-up for fundraiser dinners; organized and worked a parish clean-up and maintenance day; planned and worked with a team on a pancake breakfast to benefit a teen shelter; and participated in a giving tree project to benefit local families. He has been on the honor roll four years; a Scholar Athlete four years; and received varsity letters in football, wrestling and track.

James plans to attend Central Michigan University to study secondary education, mathematics and social studies.
