Brandywine senior Lauren Leonard signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her basketball career at Kalamazoo Valley Community College on Friday afternoon.

Leonard has been a pivotal component of a Brandywine program that has posted three consecutive district championships, back-to-back regional championships, and one semifinal appearance over the past three seasons, while recording an overall record of 64-10 over that same time span, including 47-4 the last two seasons.

“Lauren’s earned this. She has worked really hard the last two years and to see where she was two years ago and where she is now. As a coach it makes you feel good because you see a kid that has worked so hard to improve at the game of basket and this is the end result as she is being rewarded with a scholarship,” Brandywine coach Josh Hood said.

Kalamazoo Valley coach Ron Welch noticed Leonard’s efforts on the court and expects the same type of player to step in and help his program next fall.

“I think Lauren is fortunate that she will have another post player to work with and learn from in all-conference player Kendra Cook, but I expect her to contribute,” said Welch. “I love the energy that she plays with and she plays hard all the time. I think Lauren can be a presence for us, and at the community college level you have to come in and contribute right away. We don’t have the luxury of developing things over three or four years.”
