County road construction schedule announced

Published 3:44 pm Friday, April 15, 2011

The Cass County Road Commission will move to summer hours effective May 2. Hours will be from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday with offices closed on Friday. Normal hours, which are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, will resume on Oct. 3.

The four 10-hour days provides a savings to the road commission’s budget during paving season. The longer days during paving season allows crews to finish a job in one day rather than having to return to that location for a second day. The four-day week also results in less use of diesel fuel.

2011 road construction

The following streets and roads will receive attention from road crews during the 2011 paving season:

• Resurfacing — Lakeshore Drive from Huntly to Barron Lake; Marcellus Highway from Decatur to Gards Prairie; Marcellus Highway from Glenwood to O’Keefe; Decatur Road from Kelsey Lake to Dutch Settlement; Redfield Street from Elkhart to Ebersole; Calvin Center from Mt. Zion North 0.75 miles; Pokagon Highway from Dailey East one mile; Bertrand Street and Redfield Street from the Berrien County line to Ironwood; Redfield from Kline to Conrad; Pine Lake Street from M-60 to Anderson; Beebe Road from Runkle to Leet; Bell Road from the Berrien County line to U.S. Highway 12; O’Keefe from Cassopolis village limits to Fox Street; Robinson Road from Mt. Zion north one mile; Indian Lake Road from Schools Street south one mile; Marcellus Highway from Hathaway to Lawrence; Wilbur Hill from the Dowagiac city limits to Peavine, Middle Crossing from Yaw Street north of Sarabyn 750 feet; and Old 205 from the Indiana/Michigan state line to U.S. Highway 12.

• Chip and seal — Barron Lake Road from Cook Street to Pokagon Highway.

• Reversions planned for this year — Road crews, which reverted Pioneer Road from asphalt to gravel in December 2010, will return to the county roads again this year with plans to revert a few paved roads to gravel. Because of the continued reduction in state funding, the commission has reviewed the total county road system and determined what roads should be reverted to gravel. The local roads are maintained through a cost-sharing program between the townships and the road commission.
