A Niles teen went to Walt Disney World this month for winning the Disney Magic of Healthy Living essay contest, a new national competition that invites children ages eight to 14 to submit essays on leading healthier lives.
Allison Grant, 14, was one of 50 winners in the contest, participated in the inaugural Magic of Healthy Living Weekend at Disney World March 18-20.
The Magic of Healthy Living initiative is a positive approach to inspire a balance of nutritious eating and physical activity among families.
Grant and the other “Healthy Living Champions” participated in what was dubbed a “TRYathalon,” an imaginative obstacle course where the children tried new foods and healthy living-themed games.
Disney Channel stars and Disney character coaches led the TRY-athalon.
A special taped message from First Lady Michelle Obama congratulated the essay contest winners during the event.
In her essay, Grant writes about how her family learned about healthy eating through the Niles community gardens project.
“We have learned how to eat healthy, homemade veggie recipes,” Grant writes. “We have donated many veggies to local pantries. Next year we are expanding our Community Gardens to include local school kids.”
Disney Magic of Healthy Living launched in September 2010 with a year-long series of healthy living public service announcements on Disney television, featuring Michelle Obama and Disney stars.
