Buchanan Commission appoints new member

The Buchanan City Commission has appointed a replacement for former board member Warren Weaver.

The commissioners voted 4-0 Monday to name Mike Terrell the new commissioner. He was selected over two other candidates with plenty of experience — former city commissioner Marlon McGuire and former Buchanan County Commissioner Don Ryman.

Terrell works for the State of Michigan as a manager of Warren Dunes State Park and other state parks in southern Michigan.

Mayor Carla Cole said the commission was drawn to Terrell for his youth and new ideas.

“He’s younger than all of us and brings a fresh outlook,” Cole said. “He is interested in the youth, recreation and the senior citizens in Buchanan.”

But Cole said it wasn’t an easy decision.

“We had some really good people who had applied,” she said. “It was a tough decision to make. They were all capable; all had the knowledge.”

Cole said Terrell seems to have strong communication skills.

“The fact that he works well with people is what was really important to us,” she said.

The commissioners interviewed Terrell, McGuire and Ryman at the Monday night meeting before making their selection.

Terrell will serve the remainder of the term left by Weaver, who resigned from the post at the end of February.
