Census: Niles’ population down 5 percent; township up 6.3 percent

Initial data from the U.S. Census Bureau for the 2010 Census show that Berrien County’s population fell 3.5 percent since 2000. Cass County, meanwhile increased 2.4 percent.
The city of Niles saw a 5 percent decrease in population, while the township’s population rose 6.3 percent.
Berrien County’s population decreased from 162,491 in 2000 to 156,813 in 2010. Cass County’s population increased from 51,086 in 2000 to 52,293 in 2010.
Other community population changes include:
• City of Niles — 12,206, 2000;     11,600, 2010; down 5 percent.
• Niles Township — 13,325, 2000; 14,164; up 6.3 percent
• City of Buchanan — 4,681, 2000; 4,456, 2010; down 4.8 percent
• Buchanan Township — 3,510, 2000; 3,523, 2010; up 0.4 percent
• Bertrand Township — 2,380, 2000; 2,657, 2010; up 11.6 percent
• City of Dowagiac — 6,019, 2000; 5,879, 2010; down 2.3 percent
• Cassopolis — 1,887, 2000; 1,774, 2010; down 6.0 percent
• Edwardsburg — 1,147, 2000; 1,259, 2010; up 9.8 percent
• Howard Township — 6,309, 2000; 6,207, 2010; down 1.6 percent
• Vandalia — 432, 2000; 301, 2010; down 30.3 percent
