This year marks the12th year for Relay For Life of Niles-Buchanan’s fight for a cure against cancer and organizers are hoping to build a bigger army in a fight shared by survivors and loved ones.

During the event, the Luminaria and Survivor Ceremonies offer time to remember those lost and celebrate those who have won the battle, while the Fight Back Ceremony gives everyone a chance to make a personal commitment to how they’re going to take action against cancer throughout the year.

There is alarming news in the fight against cancer. According to the Niles-Buchanan Relay for Life, this year, cancer is poised to take over as the number one killer of Americans, surpassing heart disease. The good news is that nearly half of all cancer deaths are preventable and that events like Relay For Life, not only educate people on what they can do to reduce their cancer risk but also raise funds that lead to better treatment and more lives saved.

“All of us who relay are helping to save lives from cancer,” said Kellie Welch, chairperson for the Niles-Buchanan Relay for Life. “Everything we do at Relay For Life contributes to reducing cancer mortality and incidences. Whether it is raising dollars that support research and free patient services or volunteering for advocacy and education efforts — we’re all a part of the fight.”

This year’s Relay will be held on July 9 at the Niles High School track. While the event is still several months away, event planners are currently recruiting more teams to join the event.

Teams are often made up of co-workers, friends and family members. Many businesses, schools, organizations and religious groups also build teams. Prior to the event, team members raise dollars by fundraising and securing sponsorships. During Relay, teams camp out overnight and take turns walking a track in an effort to raise awareness and funds in the fight against cancer.

Those interested in starting or joining a team can log on to www.relayforlife.org and follow the links to the Relay for life of Niles-Buchanan page. Those unable to join a team can simply log on to make a donation.
