Students enrolled in a course on domestic violence this semester at Andrews University were supporting Polly’s Place-Niles, Inc. The class has been raising funds for the shelter, including a “barefoot run” in the snow. Others have volunteered time to clean the facility.

Students will present the earnings to the organization in a ceremony on campus. This will take place during a class session at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the lower level of Burman Hall, Classroom C. Peggy Cain, chairwoman of the board of directors of Polly’s Place, will accept the contributions on behalf of the organization.

Speakers from Polly’s Place, including a former resident who benefited from shelter programming, will address the class. Students will be brought up to date on operations and future plans for the organization.

Polly’s Place is a faith-based charitable organization serving woman and children from abusive situations. The shelter is a place of hospitality and healing. Guests are referred to Polly’s Place from emergency shelters, churches and other sources once the initial crisis has passed.

Polly’s Place uses a holistic approach to healing, with an eight-week structured program. The program includes case management, individual and group therapy and education. Polly’s Place has a speaker’s bureau and is available to community groups seeking information about domestic violence. Volunteers are needed to help Polly’s Place accomplish its mission.
