Search warrant nets one arrest for narcotics, stolen property in city

Cass County Drug Enforcement Team reported Friday that on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 17, officers were requested to assist Dowagiac Police Department and  Dowagiac Code Enforcement in the 55000 block of Colby Street.

HelmkeOfficers with the police department and representatives with the code enforcement division went to the residence to serve a notice of ordinance violation along with investigating an active code enforcement violation at the time of the service.

Upon doing so, officers located what was believed to be stolen property. Based on discovery of the alleged stolen property, CCDET detectives secured a search warrant for the residence.

When the search warrant was executed, detectives located approximately half a pound of marijuana, numerous prescription drugs, more than $800 cash and a large quantity of firearms and other stolen property.

David Helmke, 27, of Dowagiac, was arrested on numerous charges, including possession with intent to deliver marijuana, possession of prescription narcotics, maintaining a drug house, possession of stolen property and felony firearms.

Helmke was arraigned Friday in Cass County Fourth District Court, Cassopolis, where his bond was set at $30,000 cash or surety. He was lodged at the Cass County Jail.
