CASSOPOLIS — Cass County commissioners put in an eight-hour day Saturday interviewing five candidates for third county administrator-controller.

Terry Proctor, who served in the position two decades, departed last February.

His interim replacement, Chuck Clarke, was one of the five finalists identified by Georgia consultant Robert Slavin.

The board promised candidates a decision in two weeks.

Commissioners quizzed:

• Patrick Jordan, vital records department manager for the Tarrant County Clerk in Fort Worth, Texas, and the former supervisor of Muskegon Charter Township.

He and Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz used to play touch football together in Muskegon.

• Clarke, Benzie County’s first administrator, a Marine and former campground operator.

• Charles Cleaver, administrative director and deputy controller for Saginaw County for 2 1/2 years and former human resources director for St. Joseph County in Centreville for 5 1/2 years.

• David Benda, former Clinton County manager and Midland County manager.

From Midland he knows former Dowagiac city manager Karl Tomion.

• Joseph Erickson, Delta County administrator from 2004 to July 2009 and a former Bessemer city manager.

Born in Muskegon, the Escanaba resident’s father was transferred to the Upper Peninsula during eighth grade.
