VandenHeede second, Carpenter third for Vikes

MATTAWAN — The Niles girls’ cross country team finished third at the Big 16 Conference West Division Jamboree hosted by Mattawan on Wednesday.

The boys’ team finished fourth.

Mattawan won both the boys and girls titles.

The Wildcats won the boys’ portion of the jamboree with 29 points. St. Joseph was second with 47 points and Lakeshore third with 63 and Niles fourth with 94.

Benton Harbor took fifth with 149.

Mattawan’s Alex Standiford was the boys’ winner with a time of 16:40.

Niles’ Sam VandendHeede finished second with a time of 17:48.

Matthew McLaughlin was 18th (19:42), Tate Brawley 22nd (20:15), Taylor Campbell 24th (20:40), Michael Geiger 28th (22:12), Daniel Sierra 29th (23:10) and Donte Stevens 30th (23:42).

Mattawan  won the girls’ half of the meet with 25 points.

St. Joseph was second with 44 and Niles third with 81. Lakeshore was fourth with 84 points.

Elley Hinkel of Mattawan was the overall winner with a time of 20:30.

The Vikings’ Bridgette Carpenter finished third with a time of 21:44.

Anne Tyler was 14th (23:27), Abigail Gaines 16th (23:34), Maureen Craig 22nd (24:08), Libby Hein 26th (25:26), Ava McKeel 27th (25:59) and Sasha Zidar 28th (29:35).
