Niles cross country team places 12th in the combined standings

ST. JOSEPH — Seventeen teams traversed the course at Riverview Park for the St. Joseph Invitational on Wednesday.

The host Bears won the boys’ portion of the cross country meet, while Otsego captured the girls’ title and also grabbed the overall championship.

The Bulldogs finished with a combined 66 points to defeat St. Joseph, which finished with 74 points. Mattawan was third with 76 points and Portage Northern fourth with 87. East Kentwood rounded out the top five with 90 points.

Niles finished 14th in the boys’ race and 10th in the girls’ race for a combined finish of 12th.

Sturgis’ Ann Marie Arseneau was the winner of the girls’ junior-senior race with a time of 19:07.

Kayla David of Otsego won the girls’ freshmen-sophomore race with a time of 19:48.

Maureen Craig was the top finisher for the Vikings in the junior-senior race as she placed 65th with a time of 24:23. Ava McKeel was 90th with a time of 25:21, while Joselyn Dlouhy was 131st with a time of 28:12.

Bridgette Carpenter finished 17th in the freshmen-sophomore race with a time of 22:19.

Abigail Gaines was 36th with a 23:55, Libby Hein was 53rd with a 25:00 and Taylor Hess was 78th with a 27:46.

Alex Standiford of Mattawan captured the boys’ junior-senior race with a clocking of 15:58.

Niles’ Sam VandenHeede finished 19th with a time of 17:43, while Matthew McLaughlin and Taylor Campbell were 52nd and 65th with times of 19:26 and 19:59 respectively.

Robbie Legus finished 117th (23:27) and Donte Stevens 119th (23:36).

St. Joseph’s Ryan Leahy won the freshmen-sophomore race after completing the course in 17:07.

Niles’ Tate Brawley was 58th with a time of 21:19, Michael Geiger 78th with a time of 22:28, Daniel Sierra 88th with a time of 23:00, Nicholas Borkowski 101st with a time of 24:13, Stuart Nielsen 106th with a time of 25:05 and Evan Long 111th with a time of 26:23.

“It was a good race,” Niles boys’ coach Mike Vota said. “Most runners had a personal best for us.”
