Alvin True, 85

Alvin I. True’s life began on Jan. 21, 1925 in Pokagon Township, the son of Ralph and Annabelle (Goodman) True.

He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II in both Europe and the Pacific.

Alvin was united in marriage to the former Evelyn V. Somers on Aug. 31, 1944 at the Pokagon United Methodist Church. He worked as a diesel mechanic and was the owner of the Sunoco gas station in Pokagon.

Alvin loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting and vegetable gardening. He was active in the Michiana Beagle Club, serving as the secretary/treasurer. He was the former fire chief of the Pokagon Township Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the American Legion Post 25 in Niles.

His loving family includes his wife of 65 years, Evelyn True, of Niles; his children, Darlene (Norman) Hogue, of Niles, Mike True, of Niles, Joseph (Virginia) True, of Sister Lakes, Mary Beth True, of Dowagiac and Dawn Honeycutt, of Niles; grandchildren, Mark (Maureen) Hogue, Todd (Debbie) Hogue, Monica (Derrick) Fisher, Brandon True, Frankie Lemanski, Christopher Lemanski, Fawn Fisher, Echo Fisher, Lilly Honeycutt and Hailey Honeycutt; six great-grandchildren; five sisters; one brother; and several nieces and nephews.

His family will gather with friends on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Yazel & Clark Chapel where his funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. led by Chaplain Jonathan Rose of Hospice at Home.

He will be laid to rest with full military honors in Mission Hills Cemetery in Niles following the service.
