The local Kappa Gamma, PI Chapter has been busy this year. Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is an honor society for women in education.

Each year, a scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who is planning to attend a college or university and is seeking a major in education. The applicant must stand in the top third or her graduating class. The invitation is extended to Buchanan, Brandywine, Edwardsburg and Niles High School seniors.

The scholarship was awarded this year to Ashlee Bielski from Niles High School at the awards assembly in May. Jan Gerstler, DKG member, made the presentation.

Members met during the May Memories Meeting at the Millennium Restaurant. Awards were given for Chapter Woman of Distinction and Community Woman of Distinction.

Hena Bosque was chosen as Community Woman of Distinction for her many years of service to the city of Niles, Niles Community Schools and surrounding school districts. Bosque has taught in adult education and grades K-12. She has volunteered as an aide/interpreter/tutor, working with Spanish speaking students.

She was served on Friends of the Library, Housing Committee and the St. Mary’s Food Pantry.
She says she like to give back to the community by helping Spanish speaking people because when she first came to Niles, so many people helped her.

Virginia Light was honored as PI Chapter Woman of Distinction for her tireless efforts in PI Chapter since 19689. She was chapter present from 1972 to 1974 and served on many committees over the years. Light taught in many Brandywine schools and was principal of Brandywine Elementary School for 20 years. She is a valued member of Delta Kappa Gamma.
