George Smith, 87, of Cassopolis passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2010 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Oct. 5, 1922 in Calvin Township, Cass County to the late Herman and Margaret (Allinson) Smith, and he was a lifetime area resident.
He married Barbara J. Smith on May 12, 1945 in Cassopolis. She preceded him in death April 29, 2010.
George was a lifetime farmer and he loved farming. His greatest joy was his family. He spent most of his later years caring for his loving wife, Barbara. George was a carpenter and woodworker in his spare time. He loved helping his family with building projects and also helping with projects at his church. He was a member of Pleasant View Church of Christ, Cassopolis, and also of the Cass County Farm Bureau.
George is survived by five children, Edward (Terrie) Smith, Warren Thomas (Millie) Smith, John Howard (Eileen) Smith and Harold (Deb) Smith, all of Cassopolis, and Kathryn L. Dockerty, of Dowagiac; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy (Robert) Brossman, of Union.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Smith.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Pleasant View Church of Christ with the Rev. Larry Settle, retired pastor of the church, officiating.
Interment will be at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, Sumnerville, Mich.
The family will receive friends Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Connelly Funeral Home, Cassopolis.
