VICKSBURG – Junior Chris Noble won a two-hole playoff at the Division 2 District Golf Tournament on Thursday at Angels Crossing to help lead the Vikings to a fifth place finish and a spot in next week’s regional.

Noble, Edwardsburg’s Chris Eaton and Gull Lake’s Brian VanDenBerg all tied at 74 after 18 holes of play.

The trio opened up on No. 10 and when both Noble and VanDenBerg parred the hole, Eaton was eliminated.

Noble then parred the 18th hole after VanDenBerg knocked his second shot into a water hazzard and the medalist title was his.

“It was nice this year coming back and getting medalist honors after last year,” said Noble, who shot in the low 80s in 2009 at the districts. “It’s really great to have the whole team going to regionals. I didn’t want to go by myself. It’s great to take it to the next level.”

“It’s a pleasure to watch him,” Niles coach Greg Gunder said.

Wolverine Conference champion Vicksburg, the host school, finished with a 317 to easily win the district title.

Mattawan finished second with a 323, the same score as Edwardsburg, but the Wildcats earned the runner-up spot based in the fifth-man tiebreaker.

Gull Lake finished fourth with a 329 and Niles fifth with a 330.

Besides Noble’s total, Niles also got an 83 from John Schrader, an 85 from Brett Phillips, an 88 from Christian Ezell and a 99 from Jared Langmeyer.

The Eddies also got a 78 from Cameron Barber, an 82 from Curtis Holmes, an 89 from Brody Baucus and a 95 from Dominic Razzano.

Niles and Edwardsburg will now compete in the regional tournament at Quail Ridge in Ada, which will be held on June 3.
