SOUTH BEND, Ind. – For the first time since 2004, the Brandywine tennis team will not be headed to the state tennis finals.
The Bobcats tied with Buchanan for third place on Friday at the Division 4 tennis regional.
Brandywine and the Bucks finished with 16 points, two shy of qualifying as a team for the finals.
Paw Paw won the regional with 24 points, while Bridgman was second with 17 points.
Both teams advance to the finals in June at Kalamazoo College.
Rounding out the top five finishers on Friday were Dowagiac in fourth (10) and Lake Michigan Catholic in fifth (9).
Buchanan’s No. 1 singles player Kristine Gordon advances to the state finals as an individual as she finished second at No. 1 singles.
Gordon was defeated by Paw Paw’s Stephanie King in the finals 6-1 and 6-0.
Brandywine did have a trio regional champions on Friday.
Lauren Leonard and Kelsey Prestly captured the No. 1 doubles crown with a 6-4 and 6-4 win over Bridgman’s Sam Wells and Katie Higgin.
Audrey Simmons and Carlee Rankel won the No. 3 doubles championship with a 6-3 and 6-3 win over Adrianna Worden and Shelby Anderson of Bridgman.
The Bobcats’ No. 4 doubles team of Ashley DeJonge and Lana Miles defeated Paw Paw’s Elyse Wegeler and Erica Haselberger 6-7(5), 6-1 and 6-1.
Buchanan’s Nash Hughes was a regional champion at No. 3 singles as she defeated Megan Klutts of Bridgman 4-6, 7-6(0) and 6-3.
Dowagiac’s best finish came from Marquira Smith, who was second at No. 2 singles after falling to Paw Paw’s Kirsten Frank 6-1 and 6-3.
Brandywine’s No. 2 doubles team of Katie Robbins and Nichole Coshow were runner-up after falling to Paw Paw’s Katie Walters and Leslie Adiance 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
