NILES – Brandywine track was successful at home Monday with a sweep over Lakeland conference rival Cassopolis (91-46) and ex-conference foe River Valley (111-26) for the boys, while the girls found victory over the Lady Mustangs (69-57), but fell to the Lady Rangers by a 81-51 score.

“A win by the girls over River Valley was big and they should be proud, but hopefully we can get a meet on Friday because we need the practice,” noted Bobcat coach Terry Borr.

Senior Dawn Smith of Brandywine was the overall winner in both the shot put and discus events, but Cassopolis showed stardom on the female side as seniors Chastity Williams, Dominica Kelly, Sasha Lanier, Jenna Lawson plus junior Taylar Williams and sophomore Hannah Ayers each raced to first place.

“I am very pleased with Chastity who is a 3-year state medalist and the others should find success in Division 4 this year at state,” said Cassopolis coach Glenn Williams, who was happy to announce he is cancer free for the time, being with no chemo since Thansgiving. “I really love coaching track since it has less stress and all our kids compete in three or four events.”

Kelly had her best high jump at five-feet and won both the hurdle race events with Chastity and her sister (Taylar) capturing all the sprints along with the relays, except the 3,200 where Brandywine had the track to themselves.

“Cass has some good kids, but we ran as expected. But winning all the relays surprised me as they are important since there is a 40-point swing difference,” noted Borr.  “We need to improve on our handoffs though with all the big meets coming up.”

Juniors Stone Hadley and Lance Prescott each posted best results for the Bobcats in the shot put and 110 hurdles respectively, with the latter also winning the longer hurdle competition. Elliott Richards won both the 1600 and 3200 for the victors with David Dykema and Aaron Marquardt capturing first place in the dashes.

“The future looks very good for Ranger track as (Agust Olafsson and Steve Eleazor) are our only seniors with Steve losing for the first time all year in the open 400,” concluded Williams. “Some of the kids will be in my hot tub tonight like they are after every meet.”

Cassopolis at Bloomingdale
BLOOMINGDALE – The Cassopolis girls’ track team defeated both host Bloomingdale and Martin in a non-conference triangular meet.

The boys’ team finished second to Bloomingdale.
