ALLEGAN – Battle Creek Lakeview won both the boys’ and girls’ titles at the Allegan Invitational on Friday night.

Mattawan was second in the girls’ portion of the meet and Sturgis third. Dowagiac placed sixth and Niles seventh.

Vicksburg was the boys’ runner-up, while St. Joseph took third. Niles placed eighth and Dowagiac 11th.

The Chieftains’ Kaisha Martin won both the 100- and 200-meters, while she finished third in the long jump.

Dowagiac’s Kyle Wright captured the pole vault for the lone first place finish for the Chieftain boys’ team.

Martin ran a 12.03 in the 100-meters and a 25.74 in the 200-meters.

Her time in the 100- and 200-meters were both new school records. The time in the 100 was a new meet record.

She also jumped 15-5.5 in the long jump and was part of the second place 400-meter relay team that posted a time of 52.47.

Also on that relay team were Jacoya Brookins, Cierra Mattix and Andrew Bradshaw.
Regina Kennedy grabbed Dowagiac’s other top three finish as she was third in the discus with a toss of 100-7.

“Overall it was a very good night for the girls,” Dowagiac coach Ken Jordan said, “though there are some areas we need to improve on. Kaisha Martin was Kaisha Martin.”

Wright jumped 13-3 in a jump-off to win the pole vault.

Dowagiac did not have another top three finish, but Chris Gantt was fourth in the 1,600-meters with a time of 4:33.74 and the 400-meter relay team of Troy Butcher, Jon Myers, Damone Huff and Austin Adams was also fourth after finishing with a time of 44.68.

“Kyle Wright stepped up big in the pole vault with a pressure jump to break the tie,” Dowagiac coach Mike Stanger said. “Chri s Gantt’s 1,600-meter run was exceptional.”
