SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Bridgman may have won the battle, but the Edwardsburg tennis team won the war.

The Bees won the Lakeland Conference Tennis Tournament on Friday at Leeper Park with 40 points, nipping the Eddies, who finished with 39 points.

Brandywine finished third with 33 points and Buchanan fourth with 28 points.

Coloma and Cassopolis were fifth and sixth respectively.

Edwardsburg was the regular season champions, while Bridgman tied with Buchanan for third place.

That combination gave the Eddies the outright league championship.

Bridgman finished second with Brandywine and Buchanan placing third and fourth.

Edwardsburg, runner-up to the Bobcats last season, snapped Brandywine’s five-year stranglehold on the league title.

The Eddies grabbed three singles championships compared to just one for Bridgman.

The Bees and Bobcats split the doubles championships.

Christina Boesler of Edwardsburg repeated as a conference champion, although this year she did it at No. 1 singles.

Boesler was the champion at No. 2 singles last year. She defeated Buchanan’s Kristine Gordon in straight sets 7-5 and 6-3.

Jenna Martin, who was second at No. 3 singles in 2009, captured the championship at No. 2 singles this season.

Martin defeated Brandywine’s Alyssa Robbins 6-0 and 6-4 for the title.

Emily Wagoner was the other winner in singles for the Eddies. She defeated Ashley Devereaux of Buchanan 6-4 and 6-4 to win the No. 4 singles flight.

Wagoner was second last year in the same flight.

Brandywine earned championships at No. 1 and No. 4 doubles, while their No. 2 and No. 3 teams both finished second to Bridgman.

Lauren Leonard and Kelsey Prestly defeated Katie Higgins and Sam Wells of Bridgman 6-2 and 6-2 to take the No. 1 doubles title.

Both Leonard and Prestly were doubles champions in 2009, but with different partners.

Ashley DeJonge and Lena Miles captured the No. 4 doubles title by defeating
Bridgman’s Jasmine Gipson and Noelle Malevitis 6-2, 2-6 and 6-0.

Megan Klutts of Bridgman was the champion at No. 3 singles as she defeated Edwardsburg’s Alex Watts 6-3 and 6-3.

The Bees’ No. 2 doubles team of Greta Englund and Tiara Straus defeated Brandywine’s Katie Robbins and Nichole Coshow 6-3 and 7-5 to take the No. 2 doubles crown.

Bridgman’s Shelby Anderson and Adrianna Worden won the No. 3 doubles title by defeating Brandywine’s Audrey Simmons and Carlee Rankel 6-1, 4-6 and 7-5.

Coloma’s Margie Urness was named the Coach of the Year.
