STEVENSVILLE – Too many men left on base spelled doom for the visiting Dowagiac varsity baseball team Monday afternoon.

The Chieftains were swept by rival Lakeshore 5-0 and 14-4 in a non-league doubleheader.

Dowagiac (6-9) left 18 men on base in the two games against the Lancers, way too many for coach Bryan Henry’s liking.

Both teams finished with six hits and had three errors in the opening game. The Chieftains were unable to drive in runs when they had the chance, while the Lancers were able to scratch out a few runs.

In the second game, Dowagiac gave up four runs in the second and eight runs in the fifth inning as the game turned into a blowout.

“You aren’t going to beat too many people leaving 18 men on base,” Henry said.
Jason Turner took the loss for Dowagiac in the opener and is now 1-4 on the season. Cody Cox had a double for the Chieftains.

In the nightcap, Darius Wilson started and took the loss. Aaron Blaske and Andrew Kurdelmeyer also pitched.
