EDWARDSBURG – Visiting Dowagiac rode a career day from senior catcher Torie Lowe to a sweep of Edwardsburg in non-conference softball on Wednesday.

Lowe went 5-for-5 with four home runs, 10 RBIs and five runs scored as the Chieftains squared their record at 3-3 with wins of 9-4 and 10-0 in six innings.

Lowe hit three home runs in the opening game and drove in five runs. Her three-run home run broke a 3-3 deadlock in the fifth inning.

Dowagiac finished the game with 10 hits, including three from Sierra Herter. Kiele Belew singled and drove in two runs, while Devon Ownby doubled for the Chieftains.

Miranda East picked up the victory for Dowagiac as she scattered eight hits.

Amelia Breslin had three hits, including a double for the Eddies. Ashley Tackett, who took the loss, also doubled.

In the nightcap it was more of the same from Lowe.

She went 2-for-2 with a home run and five more RBIs as Dowagiac pounded out another eight hits.

“What can I say about Torie Lowe?” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke questioned. “I have never seen anything like that in softball before – four homeruns and 5-for-5 on the day with 10 RBIs and five runs. It was amazing to watch her hit today! Who knows what she would have done if Edwardsburg didn’t intentionally walk here three times.”

Edwardsburg and former Dowagiac coach Randy Brooks was equally impressed.

“We had no answer for Torie Lowe today,” he said. “She hit three different pitches for home runs.”

Tara Sova was the winning pitcher for the Chieftains as she tossed a four-hitter.

Katie Lorenz went 3-for-4 for Dowagiac, while Kristyn Turner doubled and drove in a run. Ownby also had a hit and a RBI for the Chieftains.

“We looked like a totally different team than how we played last week,” Behnke said. “We made a few defensive changes and talked about being the one to make plays and that is what the girls did tonight. We made some mistakes, but they were aggressive mistakes for the most part and that is an improvement.”
