Local softball teams fall in tourney play

PORTAGE – The Brandywine softball team went 0-3 at the Portage Central Invitational on Saturday.

The Bobcats (2-8) were defeated by Portage Northern 7-2, Hudsonville 14-0 and Kalamazoo Christian 12-2.

Brande Overholt took the loss in the first and third games, while Mikayla Kemp was the losing pitcher against Hudsonville. Overholt had seven strikeouts against the Huskies.

Kemp had a triple and Overholt a pair of singles against Portage Northern and Overholt had a pair of triples against Kalamazoo Christian.

Otsego Invitational
OTSEGO -The Buchanan softball team went 1-2 at the Otsego Invitational on Saturday.

The Bucks (7-3) were defeated by St. Joseph in its first game 2-0.

Alexis Lenox took the loss despite allowing just five hits.

In the second game, Buchanan rebounded to defeat Sturgis 18-3.

Audrey Oake was the winning pitcher.

Rachel Downs drove in five runs and Kayla Kerrigan had four hits, including a triple.

Debbin Adams also had a triple for the Bucks.

Buchanan then dropped a 3-2 decision to Mendon.

Oake took the loss for the Bucks.

Downs had a triple as Buchanan managed only two hits against the Hornets.

Chieftain Invitational
DOWAGIAC – The Niles varsity softball team went 0-2 at the Chieftain Invitational on Saturday.

The Vikings (0-5) lost to eventual champion Mishawaka Marian 8-0 in their first game and then fell for the second time in three days to South Bend Washington 7-4.

Against Marian, Niles banged out seven hits, but could not push a run across the plate.
Charissa Spear, Sophie Nielsen and Ashley Evans all had two hits.

Heather Daniels took the loss as she allowed just three earned runs, while striking out 11 and walking five.

Niles grabbed a 4-3 lead on Washington in the third inning, but the Panthers scored twice in the fifth and sixth frames to pull out the victory.

Niles had 13 hits in the loss.

Brittney Buti had a triple and Larkin Carey had a double, while Spear and Sarah Cramer both had three hits.

Daniels finished with two hits.

Buti took the loss as she allowed five earned runs on five hits with a strikeout.
