Newman, Sly earn All-State honors

Brandywine sophomore Carlie Newman has been selected first team All-State in Class C by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.

Niles junior Nichole Sly was a Special Mention pick in Class A.

Newman helped lead No. 2-ranked Brandywine to the Class C semifinals.

The two-time All-Lakeland Conference selection scored 411 points this past season for the Bobcats and averaged 16.4 points per game.

Newman had 132 rebounds, 75 steals and 45 assists.

She made 59 3-pointers and became Brandywine’s all-time leading 3-point shooter as just a sophomore.

Newman finished the year shooting 37 percent from the floor, 38 percent from 3-point range and 64 percent from the charity stripe.

Sly led Niles in almost every offensive category this past season.

She scored 341 points and averaged 15.5 points per game.

She had 199 rebounds, 79 steals and 132 assists.

Sly shot 57 percent from the floor and 68 percent from the free throw line.

She helped Niles to a runner-up finish in the Big 16 Conference West Division.

Sly scored a season-high 25 points against Benton Harbor and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds on three separate occasions.
